Premier Gordon Campbell joined Nanaimo-Parksville MLA Ron Cantelon and Qualicum Beach Acting Mayor Jack Wilson (right) April 4 to announce plans for Qualicum's Spirit Square.

The Town of Qualicum Beach will develop its very own B.C. Spirit Square thanks to $162,500 from the provincial government, Premier Gordon Campbell announced April 4.

Located near the downtown commercial core next to a new seniors’ facility, curling rink, Community Hall, and schools, the Spirit Square will provide a multi-functional outdoor gathering place in a space already used for public events.

The central location at Memorial Avenue and Veteran’s Way at the site of the 1933 community hall makes the most of a visible, high-use area close to transit.

The funding will support enhancements to existing event space, including a removable stage for various outdoor gatherings.

The replacement of existing stairs will make way for multi-level seating and a ramp for enhanced accessibility, plus site furniture, landscaping and better lighting.

Decorative design elements on a feature wall of the community hall plus interpretive signage will highlight the area’s historical roots.
