Premier Gordon Campbell was in Port Alberni April 4 to announce $440,000 in BC Spirit Square funding.

Port Alberni’s Harbour Quay will be upgraded and expanded thanks to $440,000 from the Province’s B.C. Spirit Squares program, Premier Gordon Campbell announced April 4.

BC Spirit Square funding will help build a first-class waterfront event facility at the Quay that will include market facilities, park space and a meeting/performance area.

The project will be developed in partnership with Quay Merchants, the Port Alberni Port Authority and Hupacasath and Tseshaht Nations to ensure that First Nations art and history are well represented.

Harbour Quay currently hosts numerous community events including the weekly Farmers Market, the summer Ourtown event for families, the Christmas Sail Past and, in July of 2008, it will once again host the Tall Ships Festival which we expect will attract in excess of 25,000 visitors.
