Premier Gordon Campbell joins Mayor Wayne Wright March 14 to announce $382,500 in provincial funding to renew New Westminster's Hyack Square as part of the BC Spirit Square program.

A renewed Hyack Square will provide a welcoming gathering place in New Westminster’s historic downtown thanks to $382,500 from the Province’s B.C. Spirit Squares program, Premier Gordon Campbell announced March 14.

"As British Columbia’s first capital, New Westminster’s plans for a spirit square are especially significant as we celebrate B.C.’s 150th anniversary this year," the Premier said.

Located between two key heritage buildings – the former railway station and the former Inter Urban train station, both now retail operations – Hyack Square links activity between the street and surrounding businesses.

This location benefits pedestrians and transit users, providing enhanced access to New Westminster SkyTrain Station, the Quay Market and Esplanade.

The City is looking to renovate the Square to
include a possible water feature, band shelter
area for celebrations and an amphitheatre
incorporating stairs, leading to the pedestrian
overpass.
