Premier Gordon Campbell joins Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Randy Hawes (right) and Mission Mayor James Atebe to announce Spirit Square funding.

The District of Mission will include a B.C. Spirit Square in the redevelopment of its waterfront, thanks to $345,000 in provincial support, Premier Gordon Campbell announced March 14.

The community’s waterfront redevelopment plan will see the development of about 60 hectares of Mission’s waterfront based on smart growth principles that aim to create a complete neighbourhood of residential, commercial and institutional buildings linked by multi-use recreational trails and public transit.

It is expected a series of public squares, including Mission’s B.C. Spirit Square, will be developed throughout the neighbourhood.

The Spirit Square is expected to feature public art, a water feature, seating, kiosks with historical signage, a public gathering space, and connections to a network of pedestrian
pathways.
