A parking lot in downtown Merritt will be transformed into a civic square, within walking distance of key public facilities and shopping, with funds from the B.C. Spirit Square program.
Premier Gordon Campbell made the announcement when he visited the community July 25. Total cost of the project is $1.1 million.
The square will be used for year-round events and gatherings, with capacity for an audience of about 500 people.
The plaza will embody the community's distinctive historical cultural and natural elements, including a waterfall feature with First Nations art and First Nations themed murals.
It will also reflect the city's revitalization as the Country Music Capital of Canada, marking the starting point of the popular ‘Merritt Walk of Stars.’
